Muriel Prince

Muriel uses both words and images in her work. Sometimes she uses words as a source only, but these are usually combined with images in the finished piece, either integrated or as separate elements supporting each other.

"Much of my work centres around "the book". I love books for their tactile qualities and the intimacy they bring between the writer/artist and the reader. My books vary in form - some are suited to traditional bindings, others to a less conventional style".

Mapping Time contains a collection of five images and text. It was produced in response to a visit to Newgrange Mound in County Meath, Ireland. The text explores the spiritual aspects and mysteries of the mound, while the images contain ancient and modern symbols depicting growth, renewal and evolution.

Mapping Time was produced as editions of four hardback bound books, containing drypoint etchings, some handcoloured, with texts printed in handmade Japanese paper.

within dark warmth

history unfolds itself

wraps you in its telling

locked in its ghosts and shadows

arms restraining

- shshhh - listen

silent voices whisper

their stories

strangely tell of me ..

.. and you

secrets long gone

yet still to be enacted

the past, the future

uncannily contained in the present
